Who is St Carlo Acutis?

Carlo Acutis (1991–2006) was born in London and raised in Milan, Italy. From early childhood, he showed a deep love for God, especially for the Eucharist. Although his parents were not particularly devout at the time, Carlo had an unusual and profound attraction to the faith.

At just seven years old, Carlo eagerly desired to receive Holy Communion as soon as possible. From his first Holy Communion on, the Eucharist became the centre of his life.

Carlo placed Jesus at the heart of everything he did. He attended daily Mass whenever he could, prayed the Rosary faithfully, and spent time in Eucharistic Adoration. He famously said, “The Eucharist is my highway to Heaven.”

While he was a deeply spiritual person, Carlo was a normal teenage boy. He loved to play soccer, go hiking, spend time with friends, and playing video games. He was also gifted in technology and enjoyed computer programming. Those who knew him described him as joyful, kind, and especially attentive to the poor and to those who were bullied or lonely.

Carlo had a natural talent for the digital world. He taught himself computer programming, graphic design, and website development, using his skills to evangelise. Before the age of 15, he created a website cataloguing Eucharistic miracles from around the world. His goal was simple: to help people encounter the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

He travelled throughout Europe with his parents to visit sites of Eucharistic miracles, gathering information and carefully researching Vatican approved miracles. He created an online exhibition that has since travelled globally, continuing to inspire countless people.

In October 2006, at the age of 15, Carlo suddenly became ill and was diagnosed with acute leukemia. The illness progressed rapidly. Carlo accepted his suffering with peace and offered it up for the Church. He offered his pain “for the Pope and for the Church.” He told his mother that he was happy to die because he had lived his life without wasting a minute on things that did not please God.

On October 12, 2006, Carlo died at the age of 15.

On October 10, 2020, Carlo Acutis was beatified in Assisi. His tomb there has since become a place of pilgrimage, where people from around the world come to pray and seek the intercession of the young saint in jeans and sneakers.

St Carlo Acutis was cannonised on the 7th September 2025 by Pope Leo XlV. Saint Carlo became the first millennial modern witness that sanctity is possible in our time.
